US: The president of the World Bank Jim Yong Kim has called for a concerted effort to tackle climate change to be made outside of the on-going UN negotiations. Writing in the Washington Post, Kim called for a “bold, global approach” adding that the world’s biggest six economies had a special responsibility to act. (Washington Post)
Global: Waste heat from cities can affect the temperature in regions hundreds of miles away, according to new research. Atmospheric circulation patterns at higher altitudes are being affected with Europe being made cooler and North America getting warmer. (The Independent)
Philippines: The Philippines has announced that it will attempt to reduce its vulnerability during 2013 after a number of extreme weather events last year. “A campaign with the private sector will be launched to involve them more on climate change issues including support for the People’s Survival Fund,” Lucille Sering, secretary of the country’s Climate Change Commission. “The main objective is to improve the capacity of (local governments) to address climate change.” (AlertNet)
Brazil: An Amazon tree census has been launch by the Brazilian government in an effort to better understand how climate change is affecting the forests and to monitor on-going deforestation. The four-year project will give the government a means to plan future conservation tactics and to assess natural capital and economic value of the forest, according to environment minister, Izabella Teixeira.
